Allergy symptoms and prevalence

Allergic Rhinitis

  • Roughly 7.8% of people 18 and over in the USA have hay fever.
  • In 2010, white children in the USA were more likely to have had allergic rhinitis (10%) than black children (7%).
  • Worldwide, allergic rhinitis affects between 10% and 30 % of the total world population
  • Worldwide,  allergen sensitization (IgE antibodies) to foreign proteins in the environment is present in up to 40% of the population.
  • In 2012, 7.5% or 17.6 million adults were diagnosed with allergic rhintis in the past 12 months.

How do allergens enter the body?

Allergens may enter the body in four different ways:

  • airways through respiratory system breathing an allergen
  •  skin by touching an allergen
  •  gastrointestinal tract by ingesting an allergen
  •  circulatory system -allergen entering the bloodstream.

What are the typical signs of allergies?

 Common symptoms include:

  • Sneezing and itchy, stuffy or runny watery nose(allergic rhinitis)
  • Itching around the nose, mouth, eyes, or roof of the mouth
  •  swelling around the face, swollen lips, tongue (angioedema)
  • Itchy skin.
  • Skin rashes (allergic contact dermatitis, eczema)
  • Hives/Urticaria
  • dry Cough
  • Wheezing
  • Anaphylaxis (a severe allergic reaction)

What should you do if you are having allergy symptoms?

  • If you've allergy symptoms, the most important thing you can do is avoid your known triggers as much as possible. Consult for treatment options with a doctor.
  • For some patients, over-the-counter medicine may be sufficient in relieveing allergies. For other patients, prescription medications and other treatments may be necessary. Consult with your doctor or a healthcare professional to develop a treatment plan.

What should you do if you donot know the real cause of your allergy symptoms?

  • Keep a symptom diary handy – detail it when and where you experience symptoms, any new products you have used, foods are eaten, etc.
  • Try an over-the-counter allergy medicine if not able to consult doctor (check with your doctor, particularly if you are taking other medications).
  • For severe symptoms – make an immediate appointment with a certified allergy specialist doctor for testing, diagnosis, and to develop a treatment plan.

Is fever a common allergy symptom?

  • A fever isn't a symptom of an allergy. A fever is normally a sign of an infection, either from a bacteria or virus. If you have allergy symptoms and also fever, make an appointment with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms and discuss treatments.

Why do we sneeze in allergies?

  • Individuals sneeze in response to an irritation or tickle in their nose. When the inner side of your nose gets a tickle, the nerve endings send a message to the sneeze center in your brain. This transmits a message to a very complex set of muscles to get rid of the tickle quickly.
  • Some individuals sneeze when they breathe cold ai.Others sneeze whenever stepping from dark into bright light. If this is happening to you, then you might have a condition called “photic” (meaning “light”) sneezing.

Which body areas may be affected by allergies?

Nose, eyes, sinuses and throat

When allergens are breathed in, the release of histamine in mucosal mast cells causes the lining of the nose to produce more mucus and become swollen and inflamed. Which in turn causes the nose to run and itch, and consequent violent sneezing may occur. Eyes may start watering and people may get a sore throat.

Lungs and chest

Asthma may be triggered during an allergic reaction. When an allergen is breathed in lungs, the lining of the passages in the lungs swells and makes breathing much difficult.

Stomach and bowel/intestine

Foods commonly causing allergy include peanuts, seafood, dairy products-milk, wheat and eggs. Cow's milk allergy in infants commonly occur and may cause eczema, asthma, intestinal colic and stomach upset. Some individuals cannot digest lactose (milk sugar). Lactose intolerance may cause stomach upsets, but should not be confused with allergy.

Skin

Skin problems that may be triggered by allergy include atopic dermatitis (eczema) and urticaria . skin allergy management  via medication, moisturisers allergy diagnosis, skin testing and immunotherapy will help

DIAGNOSIS OF ALLERGY

How are seasonal and perennial environmental allergies diagnosed?

The foremost thing to do is to see a certified allergist doctor, who will do the following:

  • Review your detailed health history and your family’s health history in view of allergies.
  • Ask in detail about the frequency and severity of your symptoms
  • Ask which type of  activities might expose you to allergens
  • Ask in detail about your home and work environments.

ALLERGIC MARCH

ALLERGIC MARCH/ ALLERGY MARCH

Allergies often begin early in life, first expressing themselves as eczema in young children. The progression from eczema to later developing food allergies, allergic rhinitis and asthma is called the allergic march. The allergic march is also called the atopic march.

  •    Step 1: Birth to 1 year of age: Skin irritation, such as hives or eczema
  •  Step 2: 1-3 years of age: Food allergies (top 8 are peanut, tree, nut, cow’s milk, egg, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish)
  •  Step 3: 4-6 years of age: Seasonal and environmental allergies, including allergic rhinitis
  •  Step 4: 5-7 years of age: Asthma, a chronic disease characterized by inflamed airways in the lungs

ALLERGY MARCH

The allergic march (or atopic march) describes the natural progression of allergic diseases from infancy to adulthood.
