Allergies are your body’s response to environmental substances that are usually harmless to the majority of us examples are pollen, molds, animal dander, latex, certain foods, and insect stings. Allergy manifestations range from mild –skin rash or hives, itchiness, running watery nose, and watery/red eyes – to life-threatening reactions.

Allergies are your body’s response to a substance it views as a dangerous “invader.” For instance, coming into contact with what is generally a benign substance, such as pollen, may cause your immune system (your body’s, defense)to respond. Substances that lead to these reactions are called allergens.

Allergy-producing substances are called “allergens.” Illustrations of allergens include house dust mites, pollens, moulds, animal proteins, insect venom, foods, and also medicines. To know the language of allergy, it is important to understand that allergens are substances that are foreign to the body and can cause an allergic response in specific conditions.

An “allergic reaction” is the method by which your body responds to the allergen. A sequence of events occur that lead to an allergic reaction. If you are susceptible to allergies, the first time you’re exposed to a particular allergen (like pollen), your body reacts by producing allergic (IgE) antibodies. The function of these antibodies is to find the allergic insults and help remove them from your system.  Resulting, a chemical called histamine is released and lead to manifestations of allergies.

Allergy Myths !

  • No, allergies are not Innocent.
  • They are a grave problem and shouldn't be ignored.
  • Untreated or Partially treated allergies affect the quality of life.
  • Allergic rhinitis  results in poor quality sleep, exhaution and daytime sleepiness.
  • Untreated or partially treated allergies can probably worsen other chronic respiratory problems such as asthma, sinusitis and skin disorders such as eczema and urticaria (hives).

  • Pollens from attractive flowers are large and sticky, don't blow very far, and require birds and bees for pollination.
  • Pollen allergy normally occur due to unattractive flowers, where pollination takes place via wind, rather than insect pollinating attractive flowers.
  • So, when patients complain that scented flowers trouble them,  it is generally due to chemical causing irritation from the perfume that makes them sneeze.

  • If the cause of allergy you’re trying to escape is pollen, house dust mite, animal dander and mold spores, moving far from the source of allergen (like landlocked area to a coast) may for the time being relieve allergies.
  • But, allergic people are also susceptible to developing new allergies, and often problems again appear within a few years with exposure to new plants, or other sources of allergens such as molds or house dust mites.
  • Some specific allergens are more prevalent in certain regions of the world, but it's said that allergic patients are susceptible to developing allergies regardless of their environment.

  • Animal allergens, specifically cat,dog and even horse allergens, can be carried on fabrics. This may cause a reaction in people who don't have pets themselves but are still affected.

  • Controlling your diet and consuming only organic food is no guarantee that you will avert food allergies.
  • On the contrary, some of the most allergenic foods are natural and unprocessed foods like cow's milk, eggs, peanuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are various ways in which a certified allergist specialist doctor can determine if you have allergies and what kind :

Skin prick tests

  • Drops of suspected panel specific allergens are placed on or just under the skin surface.
  • Raised papules/swellings (about the size of a mosquito bite) s indicate an sensitivity to that allergen.
  • Results are mostly known within 20 minutes.

Blood tests

  • Blood tests are investigations that determine Immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies.
  • These antibodies circulate in your blood for specific allergens. Lab results may take few days.
  • Blood tests are frequently used for individuals with skin hypersensitivities or medication requirements that prevent skin testing.

Food challenge test

             For suspected specific food allergies

Patch Test

For Contact Dermatitis against few antigens or chemicals

  • Skin and blood tests are mostly very accurate in showing a sensitivity to a particular environmental allergen.
  • A positive result, though, doesn’t mean that you will develop symptoms when exposed to the allergen. It only indicates that you are SENSITIZED to that aowxudux allergen
  • That’s why it is important to work with a certified allergist, who takes complete allergy related history.
  • An allergist will know how to put your test results together with your personal history to make an accurate diagnosis.

  • A complete history of your allergy manifestations and allergies in your family- family history
  • Advised specific allergy tests: skin or blood tests
  • Appropriately interpreted test results by a certified allergist
  • Any other tests, such as a physical exam, that are necessary
  • A comprehensive treatment plan that consists of allergen avoidance, possible medication, and/or IMMUNOTHERAPY.
