Pet Allergy

What causes pet allergy?

Allergic reactions to cats, dogs and other furry animals are due to proteins found in scales of the pets’ skin, called dander, also present in their saliva and urine. These small proteins can remain suspended in the air for a long time, settle down in furniture, house dust that circulates through your entire home. You are allergic to pet dander.

Symptoms of pet allergies?

Pet allergens can cause reactions when they are inhaled, enter the eyes, or come in contact with skin. Just entering into a room where a cat or dog has been present, can cause symptoms. On contact with the animal or being licked may cause itching and urticaria. Reactions can occur within minutes or may be delayed for hours after exposure.

Which breeds of dogs or cats are hypoallergenic?

There is no breed of cat or dog that is hypoallergenic because they all shed dander. Some breeds may produce lesser amount of allergens than others, Washing your cat or dog isn't likely to lead in any significant difference in allergens. Research shows the benefits of washing are so short term, that it is not likely to be worth the effort.  Some options of good pet washes are available here

How do you prevent pet allergy symptoms?

Finding a new home for the pet is very effective way to reduce levels of pet allergens in the home.

If you choose to change home, keep in mind that once the cat or dog is removed from the home, symptoms might not improve for weeks or even months, as allergen levels decrease quite slowly. Professional cleaning may help with following tools available online, and you can hurry up things along by making extensive environmental changes, such as removing carpets and upholstered furniture and using vaccum cleaners with HEPA filters for home cleaning

Can we live with a pet if we are allergic to it?

For majority pet owners , finding a new home for a lovely pet is a difficult choice, especially when there is an emotional attachment to their pet.

Taking allergy medication, especially when you know you are going to be exposed to pets  is one option to consulted with your allergist.

The following lifestyle changes may help:

  • Restrict pets to single area of the home when inside. can use this home for pets
  • Always keep pets out of the bedroom.
  • Cover beds and pillows with allergen-proof encasings. It’s often very difficult to remove pet allergens that may have got into mattresses, and pillows.
  • Use a HEPA-filter vacuum daily, especially in rooms where the patient with pet allergies spends the most time of day. Consider a HEPA air cleaner for the bedroom.
  • Replace carpets, upholstered furniture, and other allergen and dust collectors with hardwood floors or washable furnishings. Take care of the bedroom – even though you should not allow your pet in this room, animal allergens can still travel through air and on your clothes.
